Draft Recap... It got ugly there for awhile...

I understand that the Browns leadership feels that the Browns can not be turned around this year, does that mean they have to not care about the draft? I feel as if this was a series of missed opportunities, cashing in on trades at extremely inopportune times, and not really cashing in on late picks. Undrafted free agents to be drafted to analyzed in a later post, they did well here, a lot of areas of need were signed!

Draft Grade: INC,  With sacrificing so many picks for future picks Incomplete is the only option, but there is a lot of work to be done still

Players Acquired during the 2013 NFL Draft (pick round, pick, overall, ESPN Overall Ranking)

Round 1 (6) (6) (ESPN: 11)  : Barkevious Mingo, LB, LSU
Round 2: Forfeit, Supplemental Draft: Josh Gordon, WR, Baylor/Utah
Round 3 (6) (68) (ESPN: 156): Leon McFadden, CB, SDSU
Round 4 (111): Traded for Pittsburgh 3rd Round pick in 2014
Round 5 (139): Traded to Indianolpolis for 4th Round pick in 2014
Round 6 (7) (175) (ESPN: 230) Jamoris Slaughter, S, Notre Dame
Round 7 (11) (217) (ESPN: 201): Armonty Bryant, DE, East Central Oklahoma (Div II)
Round 7 (21) (227) (ESPN: 196): Garret Gilkey, OG, Chardon State (Div II)
*Devone Bess, WR, MIA  was acquired during this draft as a result of a trade of picks

So, if the rumor that I am starting is true, that there will in fact be a Division II in the NFL, the Browns have a leg up. Obviously that is not happening, so why the Browns selected multiple Division II players, one who is dealing with a suspended sentence of 5 years for, anyone? Anyone know what this brilliant mind got arrested for? Selling weed, that is probably not wise. But what is even less wise, selling it at football practice as Armonty Bryant was doing.  People say he is a beast, huge character baggage  he does actually have 5 years hanging over his head. This is a problem. Anyways, Phil Taylor gingerly tossed someone (as I picture it happening) threw a window. He seems pretty rad.

I was intrigued by this decision, it got me to thinking. When the Browns were sitting at pick 68 and certainly targeting a CB, had a few options, McFadden (who they took), the CB from Connecticut, and the Honey Badger. They didn't take the Honey Badger, he was selected with the very next pick by Arizona. I thought, Wow, Browns are thinking high character, then they go after someone with a sentence over his head! I think that there is nothing exciting about this draft, other than getting picks for next year.

Round 1 (6) (6) (ESPN: 11)  : Barkevious Mingo, LB, LSU  (Height: 6 foot 4, 241 Lb.)

Exciting possibilities, does not really address the needs at CB, but many believe a better pass rush makes a better CB (However, the inverse must also be true by that logic). I think he would have been available later, and a trade could have netted many valuable picks.  Overall though, I give this pick a B+. That was the consensus of the other die-hard Browns fans in the Dawg Pound Sports Bar (I am trying different names for the Basement).

Round 2: Forfeit, Supplemental Draft: Josh Gordon, WR, Baylor/Utah (Height: 6 foot 3, 225 Lb.)

Many people would not count Josh in this list because it was a supplemental pick. Nonetheless  it counted as a pick for this year, so I am counting in the recap, I can do whatever I want on my damn blog. Anyways, what do we get from Gordon

2012 Stat Line: 50 Receptions, 805 yards, 16.1 YPC, 5 TD

This line is impressive not for any reason except, this was in the NFL. He was the leading receiver on a the Browns last year, and this year he gets training camp. He is a great player and the character questions seem to be cleared up. He is an excellent pick in this draft!

Round 3 (6) (68) (ESPN: 156): Leon McFadden, CB, SDSU (Height: 5 foot 9.5, Weight: 193)

I think that CB was a great need here. But why not consider the Honey Badger here? Obviously a spotted past is not an issue with this regime. I don't know a lot about him, not thrilled by the pick, but at least it took care of a need.  Maybe this guy is a stud, but I think that the value was the big issue. There were still good TE and other CBs available at this point.

Round 4 (111): Traded for Pittsburgh 3rd Round pick in 2014

I am glad that we got a pick for next year from Pittsburgh, however this is the first time since the 60s that we have traded with Shittsburgh. They took a study corner at Pick 111 in the 4th round, he was an Overall rating of 79 on ESPN, Shamarko Thomas, Syracuse. Why do I have a feeling that was not a good decision and that Pittsburgh is laughing at us, like usual.  Probably won't be too great of a third rounder next year as Sharmarko will lead them on a deep play off run, while laughing at us.

It is always good to stockpile picks for next year. But the water is leaking pretty badly, lots of holes need to be filled. I watched the elite franchises in the draft, and I watch Cleveland. and the draft approaches are so different. Cleveland seems a little confused sometimes, and vulnerable.  It just seems like the elite franchises are taking advantage of our collective stupidity.

Round 5 (139): Traded to Indianapolis for 4th Round pick in 2014

By this point, the draft was thinning out fast. A trade back into the fourth is a positive, but I feel like the draft, at some point, should involve the selection of actual players, that can help your team, today. Maybe I am naive and this draft was so bad, but many other teams seemed to be selecting some amazing players, that would have filled some huge holes for the Browns. Moving on.

Round 6 (7) (175) (ESPN: 230) Jamoris Slaughter, S, Notre Dame (Height:6 feet, Weight: 195 Lbs.)

Don't get too excited 1980s Browns fans, no relation to Webster Slaughter (Who, by the way,  dunked on one of my High School Teachers at a Browns vs. Hudson High School Faculty game). This guy has a pretty great name, as did another available Safety, much higher rated as well, Baccari Rambo, S, Georgia. Safety is a need, Ward is solid, but can't do it all alone. This guy seems to have quite a list of injuries ankle, Achilles  and meniscus, yikes, and you were concerned about Milliner having Hernia surgery? Are you kidding me!

Round 7 (11) (217) (ESPN: 201): Armonty Bryant, DE, East Central Oklahoma (Div II) (Height: 6 foot 4, Weight: 263)

Another DE? Are you kidding me? Probably would have been a much earlier pick, but character issued stopped that. Big and atheltic, but it is not that hard to look dominant against a DII school.  Wasn't even that great at showing his athleticism at the combine either. I am still concerned about TE and FB at this point. The guy I really liked was the FB from Wake Forrest that went a few pick earlier.

Round 7 (21) (227) (ESPN: 196): Garret Gilkey, OG, Chardon State (Div II) (Height:6 foot 6, Weight: 318)

Well, at least they got a Guard! I am not sure that going for another DII player was the best decision. I feel as if TE and FB were totally neglected! This guy could be good, he is big, fairly athletic, and has good feet. I would love to say I knew more, but I only watched a view Chardon State games on ESPN 23 last year.

*Devone Bess, WR, MIA  (Height: 5 foot 10, Weight: 193) was acquired during this draft as a result of a trade of picks

The Browns swapped around some picks to get this guy. I think this is a wise decision. With that being said, I was curious to see how those swaps worked out. It turned out that Cleveland ended up not getting another option to draft  Ryan Nassib. While they may not have been thinking this, it did create an interesting situation that he went at 110. But I think Bess is a solid receiver.

2012 Stats: 778 yards, 61 catches, 1 TD
Career: 3447 yards, 321 catches, 12 TD

Brief Draft Review

Overall, I do not think this was the most exciting draft ever. I think that value was completely neglected, as well as addressing glaring needs with non-starter caliber players.  Some of these players could turn out well,
but it was not a sexy draft. Areas of need may have been ignored entirely.

Areas of Need

Corner Back

he secondary still looks like Swiss cheese. Haden is starting CB and McFadden (second round pick) may be the other starting side? Skrine is apparently more capable at defending the slot, he seems more capable of defending a blind 12 year old school girl. I wouldn't be suprised to sign another free agent CB in the near future. McFadden was not a bad pick, but there were better options, like getting the top CB in the draft at the 6 pick, or make some trades to have picked one in the second round. Kiper is saying that McFadden has the chance to start this year, because of ability? Probably more because of necessity.

Front Seven

I think Mingo does have a shot to start, but this means Sheerd will not. To me, this is unfortunate, I think he is being given a bad break.  The front seven should be decent by now, at least serviceable this year. This was a major area of need, but largely addressed in free agency, and by no means as big of a hole corner back. Armonty Bryant was a pick that could have represented value, but the character baggage is huge, and at that point there were still many huge holes that could have been filled, even with a late round pick.

Tight End

Not one pick addressed this need. The TE position was entirely ignored at the draft. The two free agent signings at TE are not the answer, more of depth moves. However, I did have a theory about the TE position  David Nelson is huge receiver who frequently played on the inside at Buffalo. Is it possible that Nelson could play a hybrid TE and WR. I would love that! I am completely speculating on this, but that would be very useful and the guy looks like a TE!

Offensive Guard

A decent guard in Garret Gilky was probably not a bad pick, however, it is unlikely that he will start this year. A better guard would have been a wise selection in the earlier rounds, or when the Browns were busy handing away draft picks for next years. Some people really like Gilky, I am always a little wary of DII products, particularly on the line.  I would have been happy with a Guard selected earlier, even in a trade in the first round.

Wide Receiver

This is now a point of depth for the Browns. They have a plethora of decent, and experienced WR. I think that this only a great thing. They have receivers in all shapes and sizes, which will give them so many options. I like the receiving corps at this point!

Safety

Slaughter was not the bets available Safety when they drafted him. They traded away numerous picks that would have addressed this need much earlier. I am probably more worried about Safety than I am about CB. I think that all the injuries Slaughter had made him undraftable, nope, three potentially career ending injuries don't scare the Browns!

Quarterback

Well, they had chances at drafting almost all quarterbacks, most twice, and passed. This is not the worst move. I think next years QB crop is going to be much better than this one. So passing was wise. I really thought they would have made a late move on Matt Scott, or Ryan Nassib. If you don't a QB can play, don't draft him, or you wind up with Brandon Weeden.

Overall this draft was acceptable.  The grade must be incomplete because of the trades. We have done very well in free agency, but I think this draft will be more remembered  from the Browns standpoint, as missed opportunities.  Dee Milliner would have been a great choice at 6, and then filled out the draft from there. I know a lot of people don't believe in drafting on need, but it should be a factor. I feel as if the Browns management did exactly what I would have expected, nothing of note.

Most experts give the Browns a C+ grade. That may be a little generous.  I think that the draft could have been something special, as it had depth at the CB and on the lines, all points of need.  Yet, they got very little of valuable  sure fire starters, at positions that lacked depth.

Look later or tomorrow for a review of undrafted free agents signed!

Round 1 Reaction

The speculation is over... with the 6th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft the Cleveland Browns select Barkevious Mingo, Linebacker, LSU.

This is not a bad pick by any means, it just left me wanting more. The Browns had offers on the table to trade back, it sounded like multiple, probably one including going to 9 with the Jets who wanted Tavon Austin, WR, WVU.  I think the Browns could have gone to 9 and still picked Mingo, or Milliner, while getting a second or third rounder. The way the draft played out that second rounder could be a very talented player. Truth be told, what Oakland did is what I was expecting the Browns to do. Trade back to between 9-13 and select the best available player, and get a second round pick.

Anyways, there a few situations that I would have preferred:

Trade with Jets:

Jets get the six overall pick (Tavon Austin, WR, WVU)

Browns get ninth overall pick (Barkevioous Mingo, LB, LSU OR Dee Milliner, CB, ALA, or DJ Hayden)

AND

Second Round pick (39 overall)

Available players possible at 39

Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
Geno Smith, QB, WVU
Darius Slay, CB, Miss State
Kyle Ertz, TE, Stanford
Jonathon Cyprien, S, Florida International

Or a dozen other solid players that could probably start for the team next year.

I am not sad about the pick, I felt like the Browns were going to tank it worse than ever. It was a solid pick, and while I don't think Linebacker was as glaring a need as Cornerback, and unfortunately I think Milliner is a better CB than Mingo is LB. However, I think that having multiple pass rushers is a great thing. This does not tell me that the team has a ton of faith Sheard transitioning to OLB from DE. I like Sheard, I believe he is going to be solid next year, I see no person who is willing to start at the corner opposite Haden.

I just think the value wasn't there, the Browns said they are not going to fix the team in one year, one draft, one free-agency. Ok, maybe that is true. However, you don't need to overdraft someone a few spots ahead at a spot of debated priority need. Trading back and risking him sliding would have been worth it. Now, the Browns do not pick until the third round. If there is a decent corner back available at that point I would be astonished. Fingers crossed on that one!

However, there is some positive in all of this. Mingo is solid. He played at LSU, with that grueling, NFL ready conference. 6 foot 4, 4.5 40 yard dash, the nfl.com comparison player is DeMarcus Ware, Dallas Cowboys. He is fast, not huge, but can get around the field well.  He needs to put on weight and bulk up some more to survive in the NFL.  Should be solid. I think the only question was could they have gotten an additional pick and still taken Mingo?

Night Two Scenarios

I think that there are still some very good players available. The experts on ESPN are saying that they could see a run on QBs and CBs in round two. So where the Browns could have had a high level QB or CB in the 30s or early 40s, we are stuck waiting until the 3rd round (pick 68).

While I must remember something, imagine the Browns are drafting at 39, which is where they would be if they did not use the supplemental pick on Josh Gordon last summer. Many experts say that Gordon would be the top receiver in this year's class. So, just at draft pick 39, when the Browns are being skipped insert this idea:

With the 39th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Browns select, Josh Gordon, WR, Baylor/Utah.
Big guy 6 foot 3, 225 pounds, played with RGIII, cleaned up his act. He played pretty well last year, without a mini camp, and not playing in awhile. I think he is (was) a wise pick here!

So, there are still some good players remaining. the Browns will have to hope that a solid CB slides into the second round. Using McShay and Kiper's mock drafts for night two as a guideline list some of the possible options that may be around. I think CB is the biggest need at this point, with TE being possible as well.

Non-Trade Options ( 3rd Round: pick 68)

Cornerback options
Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB, Conn
Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise
Tyrann "Honey Badger" Mathieu, CB, LSU
Jonathon Banks, CB, Miss State

Non-CB options

Gavin Escobar, TE, SDSU
Matt Barkley, QB, USC
Matt Scott, QB, ARZ

One of these players may slide down and would probably be a wise selection. I think that it wouldn't be a surprised to see the Browns trade back into the second round

Trade Scenario

I could see a QB sliding that the Browns want to get in on. I think that New England or Philly could be possible trade partners. I think Philly will take Geno Smith today. Not sure exactly who Cleveland would be going in to get, I thought Manuel was going to be there boy! I think the Bess thing will end up happening, I would guess a 5th rounder, not a bad value, but only if the other picks address CB first!

Trade with NE for the Browns third rounder and fifth rounder for the Browns to select Gavin Escobar, TE, SDSU.

7 Round Browns Mock Draft with Trades

Less than 100 hours until the NFL draft... Here is a projection of the Browns selections with multiple scenarios at each pick. The first list is without trades. Using ESPN.com's round projections as a guideline for who could potentially be available at those picks.

Hypothetical Picks (No Trades)

Round 1 Pick (6): Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama

*This would be a dream if Milliner would slide to six, unlikely, but is probably the only player worth the Browns taking at six. Other possibilities: Dion Jordan, LB, Oregon of Ezekial Ansah, LB, BYU

Round 2: Exercised on Josh Gordon in supplemental draft, who most have said would be the number 1 receiver taken this year, absolutely worth a second rounder!

Round 3 Pick (68): EJ Manuel, QB, FSU

*I think Cleveland really likes this guy. I doubt he would make it this long, which is why a trade back, particularly if Milliner was gone. He would be good value this far into the draft. Other possibilities: Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse.

Round 4 (104): Brian Winters, OG, KSU

*A bit of a homer pick, but guard at this point would be logical, and addresses need, at good value. I think that safety could be a pick around this point as well.

Round 5 (139): Bacari Rambo, S, Georgia
*Safety is a need, this guy is projected any where from round 3-5 by most. I would love a solid safety with Ward. TE at any point is probably logical here to.

Round 5 (164): Dion Simms, TE, Michigan State
*Huge, tough, solid TE option. I wouldn't be to surprised to see the Browns go at TE earlier in the draft.

Round 6 (175): Tommy Bohanon, FB, Wake Forrest
*For some reason I feel like this guy is going to wind up with the Browns, a fullback would be a nice addition.

Round 7 (227): Johnathon Stewart, ILB, Texas A & M
*Still need to do something in the draft about a pass rush. I love big inside linebackers.

This would be a nice haul in the draft and address many of the obviuos needs at CB with the top CB in the draft QB (maybe in a year or two), A guard project in Winters, a Safety with an awesome last name, big TE, blocking FB, and project linebacker. I don't see it going this way because I see Milliner being gone by pick 6, probably even at 5. A trade now seems logical.  There has been a good amount of talk that San Diego will trade up to get ahead of Arizona.

Let's go with the one I outlined in my full first round mock draft:

San Diego: (6) Lane JohnsonOT, Oklahoma, 5 (164)
 Cleveland: 1 (11), 2 (45), and 6 (179)

Cleveland
Round 1 Pick (11): Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
*I think CB is a much bigger need but with Dee Milliner likely gone, trade back and get a great guard in Warmack. Some people would like Jonathon Cooper, OG, UNC, who also would be a great pick. Cleveland does not need the OT in Lane Johnson that Arizona and SD both covet. This would make a huge difference in the run and pass game, not sexy, but wise.

Round 2 Pick (45): DJ Hayden, CB, Houston
*It may be a stretch to think he is available at this point, but I would love this selection, some believe he is a better CB than Milliner, I disagree, but great value in the second round, even would be worth trading up a few picks to get him if need be. I can see it already "The Ha(y)den Brothers," most exciting secondary since... The Dawg Pound creation. If Hayden is gone I would guess QB is likely, Ryan Nassib, Syracuse or EJ Manuel, FSU would be possible.

Round 3 Pick (68): EJ Manuel, QB, FSU

*I still think that in this scenario the Browns would take EJ Manuel, and I wouldn't be shocked to see him be taken in the first or second round

TRADE!!!!
The Browns:  Round 3 Pick (91)
New England: Round 4 Pick (104), Round 7 (227), and 2014 5th round pick

Rouond 3 (91): Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State
*This guy slides and the Browns take advantage! Sending their 4th rounder (104) and next years 5th rounder, as well as this year's 7th rounder (227) for the right to select this guy. Great pick! Big fast, under rated pass catcher, can't wait to see what Chud and Turner can do with him!

Round 5 (139): Bacari Rambo, S, Georgia
*Safety is a need, this guy is projected any where from round 3-5 by most. I would love a solid safety with Ward. Great choice in both situations.

Round 5 (164): Chase Thomas, OLB, Stanford
*This transition to the 3-4 means more LBs, I wouldn't be surprised to see more than just one LB selected in the later round.

Round 6 (175): Tommy Bohanon, FB, Wake Forrest
*For some reason I feel like this guy is going to wind up with the Browns, a fullback would be a nice addition.

Let's review the two drafts (with arbitrary rating system employed!):

Areas of Need: CB, QB, TE, OG, S

First Scenario

Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama (5 Stars)
EJ Manuel, QB, FSU (3.5 Stars)
Brian Winters, OG, Kent (2.5 stars)
Bacari Rambo, S, Georgia, (2.5 stars)
Dion Simms, TE, Michigan State (2.5 stars)
Tommy Bohanon, FB, Wake Forrest (3 stars)
Jonathon Stewart, Texas A & M, (2 stars)

Second Scenario
Chance Warmack, G, Alabama (5 stars)
DJ Hayden, CB, Houston (4.5 stars)
EJ Manuel, QB, FSU (3.5 stars)
Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State (3.5 stars)
Bacari Rambo, S, Georgia, (2.5 stars)
Chase Thomas, OLB, Stanford (2.5 stars)
Tommy Bohanon, FB, Wake Forrest (3 stars)

Interestingly both drafts resulted in 7 picks, however the second one has a substantial amount more depth. This is contingent on many people sliding below projected draft position on ESPN, however that does happen frequently. I would  love to see Cleveland take advantage of a player who is sliding. I think trading out of the number 6 pick is very likely.  I would love to see a top tier guard and pick up a second round pick. Also, I see the possibility of trading back with SD or MIA to get a second rounder, which would then be sent to NE for QB Ryan Mallet. Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

ONE WEEK UNTIL CHRISTMAS! Full First round Mock Draft!

Today represents one week until the NFL Draft! Todd McShay (Scouts Inc.,) and Mel Kiper, Jr. (ESPN),  have there latest mock drafts out, time get something out for the Browns specif. This mock draft will incorporate both Kiper and McShay's latest mock drafts (4.18.13), they are regarded as two of the best draft forecasters in the business and obviously know a whole hell of a lot more than I do about all things football. So I will include trades in my potential draft, and also show both expert's predictions, as well as the 10 pick head-to-head draft they had on 4/18/13. All Brown's selection will be analyzed in-depth.

Round 1

(1) Kansas City Chiefs: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A & M
Kiper and McShay: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A & M
Kiper vs. McShay draft:  Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A & M

(2) Jaxsonville Jaguars: Dion Jordan, OLB, Oregon
   Kiper: Ezekial Ansah, DE, BYU

Kiper vs. McShay draft: Dee Milliner

(5) Detroit Lions: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
     Kiper: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
McShay: Eric Fischer, OT, Central Michigan
Kiper vs McShay: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma

(6) Cleveland Browns, TRADE, TRADE, TRADE!!!!!

Everyone know that Arizona and Buffalo would love to get their hands on an OT at 7. I feel that if Dee Milliner of Dion Jordan were to slide this far, either one would make a trade  Many believe that Lane Johnson of Oklahoma represents the last of the high level OTs. With San Diego and Miami both wanting OTs I think that a trade back to either 11 or 12 could be possible.  I have seen a few people projecting a trade in that area. I believe that San Diego is the trade partner.

The Trade:

(6) San Diego: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
Cleveland: 1 (11), 2 (45), and 6 (179)

While I may optimistic in the amount of picks I think a potential bidding war could occur, benefiting the Browns. Read on to see who the Browns get at 11!

Kiper: Cleveland: Dion Jordan, OLB, Oregon
McShay: Cleveland: Geno Smith, QB, WVU
Kiper vs McShay: Cleveland: Jonathon Cooper, OG, UNC

(7) Arizona Cardinals:  Ezekial Ansah, DE, BYU
     Kiper: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
     McShay: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
Kiper vs McShay: Dion Jordan, OLB, Oregon

(8) Buffalo Bills: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
     Kiper: Jonathon Cooper, OG, UNC
     McShay: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
Kiper vs McShay: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama

(9) New York Jets:  Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah

     Kiper: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
     McShay:  Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
Kiper vs McShay: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU

(10) Tennessee Titans: Xavier Rhodes, CB, FSU

     Kiper:  Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
     McShay:  Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
Kiper vs McShay: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida

(11) *Cleveland Browns: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
Kiper: San DiegoLane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
McShay: San Diego: Jonathon Cooper, OG, UNC

Ideally I think that are a lot of ways the Browns could go here, including Geno Smith, QB, WVU, or if either OG Chance Warmack, Alabama or Jonathon Cooper, North Carolina would slide, they would probably be the pick. I think Mingo is a good pick, and good value with the additional picks gained in the trade. I would be much happier with Warmack or Cooper, and not thrilled to see Geno Smith. So to summarize the trade and hypothetical picks with the additional picks.

San Diego: 1 (6) Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma

Cleveland: 1 (11) Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
2 (45) DJ Hayden, CB, Houston
6 (179) Tommy Bohanon, FB, Wake Forrest

       Kiper: DJ FLuker, OT, Alabama
       McShay: Xavier Rhodes, CB, FSU

(13) Tampa Bay: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
       Kiper: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
       McShay: Tevon Austin, WR, WVU

(14) Carolina Patriots: Sheldon Richardon, DE, Missouri

I would imagine there will be more than one trade. I could see SF really moving around to jump on any number of players. Full Browns mock to come soon!

Cleveland Browns Mock Draft Scenarios

The Browns have many options in the upcoming NFL draft. There are still many areas of need and a relatively deep draft should help fill many of those holes. Trades are highly likely so the Browns can obtain more picks, because they do not have a second round draft pick this year (exercised in the supplemental draft to select Josh Gordon). So people did not like selecting Gordon, I think this was a great decision and should not be second guessed. Just think on draft day that the Browns second round draft is a rookie with a year of excellent experience under his belt. I will outline 2 different situations in the draft with multiple pick possibilities. Some holes could still be filled in free agency (David Nelson would probably eliminate the need for WR early).

Cleveland Browns Draft Needs:

Corner Back
Tight End
Offensive Guard
Depth at Linebacker
Wide Receiver
Full back
Quarter back?

Scenario 1

In Scenario 1 the Browns stay put at pick 6 and select 1 of 2 players available that are both a need and a high quality player at that position. The players will be listed in order of best match and value for the Browns at pick six. Two players really jump out as being perfect matches for the Browns at pick 6, there is a good chance that both of these players are gone by pick six, and if that is the case, the Browns needs to go to scenario 2.

With the 6th pick in the NFL draft the Cleveland Browns Select:

Dee Milliner, Cornerback, Alabama University

Height: 6 Feet
Weight: 201
40: 4.37
Vertical Leap: 36 inches

This makes the most sense and represent great value.  Milliner is a absolutely a top 5, maybe even a top 1 or 2 player in this draft. Milliner is by far the best cornerback in the back and would pair very nicely with Joe Haden. He has speed, experience at a high level (playing in the SEC will do that) and he fills a major hole. The league is going more and more in the direction of passing the ball more. Having two legit shutdown corners changes the entire Browns defense and the team immediately with the pick of Milliner. If he slides to the Browns at pick this is a no-brainer selection. This is by far the best case scenario for the Browns and many experts think this is a possibility.

Dion Jordan, Outside Linebacker, Oregon University

Height: 6 foot 6
Weight: 248

I have been back and forth if I would rather see the Browns take Jordan or trade down in Milliner is off the board at 6, which is very likely.  Jordan is an absolute beast! Many think he will go in the top 2, possibly even number 1. He would add great depth at Linebacker and provide incredible versatility in the defense, he is fast, able to drop in coverage, and is a great edge pass rusher. While I would prefer to see Milliner in the Brown and Orange, I think that Jordan would be an extremely exciting player would give the defense a nice kick. This is a great option, but at 6 may not even be a possibility.

If the Browns do stay at pick 6, these are the two players who represent both value and need, as well being the two best prospects at their respective positions.

Scenario 2

If Dee Milliner or Dion Jordan is available at 6, the Browns need to select one of them. However, it is also interesting to think about the Browns making a trade back about 3-8 spots or so. There are rumors that the Browns are in talks with the Dolphins about trading pick (according to Mike Krupka, Dawgbynature.com). The Dolphins would give the Browns the 12th overall pick and a combination of other picks (probably a second and fifth rounder, or 3rd and 4th). This is a great idea for the Browns who do need more picks in this draft.  So in this scenario let's assume the Browns get a first and a second rounder and a fifth rouder from Miami.

The Trade

Miami gets:  Round 1, Pick 6

Cleveland gets: Round 1 pick 12, Round 2 pick 42 (overall), and Round 5 pick 146 (overall)

This is an ideal situation because those two extra draft picks could be starters for this team. Attempting to project into the fifth round can be difficult, but that is the fun of these types of situations! With so many areas of need this is probably the wisest idea.

3 options for pick 12:

1. Jarvis Jones, LB, Georgia

This guy is an absolute beast! He was projected to go in the top 3 before concerns about a medical issue with his spinal stenosis. The health issues are very real but he would be a great selection if he would slide that far is another question. He would not represent great value at 6, but at 12 he is great value, and with the addition of two other picks in this trade, the draft would be shaping up quite nicely.

2. Chance Wormack, OG, Alabama

While guard ranks a little below CB and a few other positions of need this is a great value pick. He would probably have to slide for this happen, but could be a great addition. Big, solid, quick linemen would really improve the Browns offensive line, making it one of the best in the AFC. Similar to Jones, not great at 6, but pretty solid at 12, and with great value. Other possible offensive linemen possibility could be Jonathon Cooper, NC.

3. Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington

May be a bit of a reach but has an NFL pedigree, solid speed and agility, could team well with Haden. A far cry from what Milliner would bring to the secondary but not a bad option at all. Corner back is still quite a glaring hole even with the two signing of Owens and Barnes, a CB will be drafted at some point on draft day. He could be a starter in the NFL as a rookie. It would not be a surprise to see it in the first round. Another possible CB that would be reasonable at the 12 spot is Xavier Rhodes, FSU. Some have Rhodes ahead of Trufant.

3 Options at pick 42

Obviously what happens with pick 12 will likely dictate the course of action at 42. However, let's use the three players above and play hypothetical who would be the best pick at 42. If Matt Barkley USC, Ryan Nassib, Syracuse, EJ Manuel, FSU, or Mike Glennon, NC State, were to slide to pick 42 I think that Browns would probably view this as a free pick from the trade and snag any of those players, highly unlikely I would say though (Todd McShay has them all off the board by 42).

1. Zach Ertz, TE, Standford

So in this situation we have the Browns taking Jarvis Jones in the first round. It would make sense to get your hands on a solid pass catching TE. He is the second best TE in this draft according to many people and would be great at this spot. The Browns need a TE that can actually catch the ball, this guy would be great! may not slide all the way to 42, but could be a great pick. If Tyler Effert, ND were to slide into day two I could see Cleveland jumping up to get him, unlikely, but would be a steal.

2. DJ Hayden, CB, Houston

In this scenario the Browns selected offensive guard with the first round pick, so the CB position needs to be addressed here. While he is generally in rated in the top 5 CBs by experts, he would fill a need and would be a good value at this point. Also, how radical would Haden and Hayden CB tandem be? If the Browns wait until the 3rd round to select a CB the market will be quite thin and the talent drop off could be extreme. A few other CBs that could be possible in this spot including Johnathon Banks, CB, Miss State, or Blidhi Wreh-Wilson, CB, Connecticut.

3. Matt Elam, Safety, Florida

In this scenario the Browns took Desmond Trufant, CB from Washington. While I do find it unlikley they would draft two players for the secondary, it could give good value and provide security in the secondary, which would be a welcome change. This would be great for the Browns, but is probably not likely.

If the Browns would pull of a trade the draft strategy may take a bend in the road. The Browns would be in a position to fill many holes with the picks but also see who is taking a slide on draft day into the second round. Great value could be had at this pick, as this is a spot in most drafts where a prospect who slides for a variety of reasons can find a home.  There are countless possibilities for the second round pick.

Options at pick 142

Projecting 142 picks into the NFL draft is a lot like picking powerball numbers, good luck. However, at this point some very viable options of quality players who fill needs would still be available. I think this would be a great place to look at three options of need, FB, TE, or best available player.

1. Tommy Bohanon, FB, Wake Forrest

I think there has been something really missing in the Browns offense since Lawrence Vickers left, well many things have been missing in the Browns offense since Webster Slaughter left, but whole nother story there. This guy is a bowling ball. He loves to block, is powerful, and is 6 foot 2, 245 pounds. Would be an excellent option, good target round and an area of need. This could be an excellent pick. Dude has a pretty rad name too. Other FB Options are Zach Boren, OSU and Zach Line, SMU. Both are solid options, but I think ignoring FB would be a huge mistake, I think Richardson would agree!

2. Tyrann Matthieu, CB, LSU

Yes, the Honey Badger could be a wise pick in the late rounds.  The dude liked to smoke weed in college, so did Gordon, so did 75% of my college. If the Browns see the possibility of picking him in a later, and he slides to a point of value, he would be great.  I think that in the right environment he could flourish. I would love to see him a late round. Can't argue the talent and skills, he was in the Heisman discussions a season before. Provides a very unique element to special teams as well.

3. Jasper Collins, WR, Mount Union

This is a total homer pick, as my father is a Mount Union Alum. The last two Mount receivers, Pierre Garcon, WASH and Cecil Shorts, Jax are doing quite well in the league. I would love to see the Browns land a Mount WR. This would be a fun pick and is still an area of need that has possibly been slightly neglected in the draft until this point.

Summary:

I think that a trade scenario for the Browns is a very realistic option.  It give the Browns more draft picks to fill the many holes. Even a fifth round pick could fill a glaring hole in this Browns team as this is a spot to grab a TE or FB, both of which are still major areas of need. While I would love to say the Browns are a CB away from being a contender, or just a pass-rusher away and could really argue to select Milliner or Jordan. However, at this point I am not sold on sticking at the 6 spot. I think that a trade down to 12 or so would be the best option. The teams drafting in that area will pluck up some talented OL players, and a few pass rushers, but great value could be had with those additional picks. A solid draft bringing in three starters would be the best case scenario, if those would be a CB, TE, and FB, this is more likely with a trade. The trade does not have to be with Miami, I could see even Buffalo and Arizona doing some jockeying with one another which would help the Browns. Let's see how this new crew does. I am not as hard on the past couple Browns drafts as others.

Cleveland Browns Offensive Free Agency Review

This should be a much shorter entry than the defensive recap as far as free agent signs go. The Browns, as of today (4/9/13) The Browns have made it very clear that addressing the defense was a priority. While last years draft, including Josh Gordon's supplemental selection, was more geared towards the offense.  The offense can not be neglected any longer! The defense was much stronger than people gave credit, and the offense was horrific.  So let's review what is going on this off-season with the offense.

Areas of Need: TE, WR, OG, QB, FB

Notable Additions:

UPDATE
Jason Campbell, QB
Previous Team: Chicago Bears
Contract: 2 years, $3.75 million
While this did signal the end of Colt McCoy in Cleveland, it is a very wise signing. The Browns got great value, more affordable than McCoy, with more experience, skills, size, and experience. He is an NFL journeyman who is on his 4th NFL team since 2006. The Browns said they would bring in a veteran to compete with Weeden. This is an excellent choice, came via free agency as opposed to Flynn, Palmer, or Smith all of whom were traded. He is very affordable and has many great intangibles. I think he has a legit shot at being the week 1 starter, means the Browns don't have to reach in the first round for a mediocre QB and can wait until the later rounds to draft another QB, if they select one at all.  Jason Camplbell was victim of continuous scheme changes in college and  early in his NFL career, he can handle a new offense. He has never had a season where he threw more INTs than TDs, which is a welcome sign, take notes Weeden. This could be a great solution for the 2013 season yet not the long term answer they wanted. Great signing.

Gary Barnidge, TE
Previous Team: CAR
Contract: 3 years, $3.75 million: To say this signing unexciting is an understatement. This is seriously the biggest off-season signing the offense has made? Did I miss something? Did the new regime watch a different team last year? The one offense I watched was horrifying. A third-tier tight end is in no way going to improve that offense, particularly with Ben Watson leaving (per Mary Cay Cabot, Plain Dealer). I will stop being Debbie Downer. It is an absolute positive that Chud brought this guy from Carolina, that only speaks positives about his leadership, work ethic, and drive. This is all positive. He is young, big, and versatile. He is a good addition to the team, but in no way the answer at TE.

Chris Ogbonnoya, RB,
Previous Team: CLE
Contract: 2 years, undisclosed: So this is another signing that is not going to define the offense. However, I have really liked Ogbonnoya the last couple years. He is a great third option at RB behind Richardson and Hardesty. I think we will see him used a bit more in the passing game as well. Not the sexy hire, but probably the right hire. Many other holes that need to be filled, good value, I am happy to see he is back.

David Nelson, WR
Previous Team: Buffalo
Contract: 1 year, undisclosed at this time

I believe this signing is highly underrated. I watched this guy in Buffalo. He is a big, strong, athletic guy that can play all over the field. A 6 foot 5 slot receiver is a very valuable asset  particularly what he could provide near the end zone. I feel as if this signing makes the WR position not an immediate need in the first few rounds of the draft. This is going to be a major impact signing for the Browns. The torn ACL should be completely repaired by the beginning of mini-camp. Great value, a point of need and a great fit.

Key Loses:

Update
Colt McCoy, QB: While I think Colt McCoy was never given a fair shot at QB in Cleveland the writing was on the wall. In fact, the trade did result in a draft pick improvement (McCoy and a 6th rounder for SFs 5th and a 7th) it is substantially better than cutting him, which would have eventually happened. I wish Colt the best and think backing up Colin Kappernick could result in playing time as Kappernick is always on the run. At least you can still hang out with Dawson in SF!

Josh Cribbs, WR/KR: While he was little used on the offense, he was an integral part of the Cleveland Browns. He provided leadership, accountability, and talent. He was a fan favorite and an asset  The new regime saw him as despensible, I think this is a mistake. He should have retired in a Brown's jersey. I am sad that is gone, I do think he will be missed more in the locker room than on the field. He was a great Cleveland Brown who gave his all to a team that had one winning season in his time here. Thanks for the great memories Josh! I can honestly say best of luck to you and the Cardinals! Update: Cribbs failed his physical because of off season knee injury, he is still likely to eventually sign there.

Benjamin Waston, TE: While he did not have great numbers last year he is better than what the Browns have in place at TE now, a couple of mediocre third string (at best) TEs. He signed with the Saints who will probably use him more efficiently than Cleveland did. I would have loved  to have seen how Turner and Chud could have used him with their TE experience. UPDATE: Signed with Saints

Mohamed Massaquoi, WR: He has may opportunities to prove himself. He was oft injured, minimal productivity and brought very little to the game. I am not surprised to see him gone and think he could easily be replaced in the draft.

Alex Smith, TE: He would be a great third TE, no big loss losing him. He tried to play full back, that failed, however he did seem semi-useful at points last year. I think he is another player that can easily be replaced. Right now though with no TEs on the market that seem to be heading Cleveland's way, he looks more valuable than he is.

Review:

This is not the off-season haul that I think many Browns fans were expecting. Barnidge does not exactly address the huge hole at TE. Jordan Cameron could be good still, however, TE is a huge point of focus in what Chud and Turner like to do on offense.  I think that TE still really needs addressed. Getting a solid TE in the draft is possible, particularly if the browns trade back in the draft.

The guard position is important and needs to be filled, however this is less urgent than some of the other positions. This is also a place where the Browns would be able to draft quite well. This draft has a plethora of lineman. I think that it is important, but TE at this point seems like a much bigger concern. Getting depth at guard should be an area of emphasis. This can happen through some lower tier free agents and the draft.  I think guard will be ok, but should not be neglected in the draft.

Wide receiver is an area that needs to be improved.  I am not as down on the receivers as many other Browns faithful. I think Gordon is a solid receiver. He had not played football in almost two years going into this season. He is fast, athletic and a hard worker, he is an excellent wide-out and I think will only continue to improve. Little did have chlamydia-hands, but since Cribbs called him last year he improved. Big, powerful, fast guy. I am not giving up on Little just yet, I think he could be a great number two receiver for the Brown and Orange. Getting depth at this position is very important. I am glad they did not go after a high-risk, high-money, low-reward type of receiver.

I think that Gordon and Little will be very good offensive targets. I would like to see them target someone in the later rounds or go after a remaining free agent. I also think that Benjamin provides the Browns with some unique options and can fill in nicely for Cribbs on the field, off the field is a different story.  I think a free-agent WR could be useful, but other areas are more important at this moment. An intriguing prospect is Domenick Hixon, went to Akron, is still available and would be an excellent addition to the receiving corps. The Browns has mild interest in Hixon, yet he has not been brought in yet. This could be an excellent and under the radar signing for the Browns. Another very interested prospect is Buffalo Bills WR David Nelson. He was injured last year but is a big guy (6 foot 5) who can really play. The Addition of Hixon or Nelson would really help depth at WR and

The QB debate is a tricky one. I am glad the Browns didn't spend huge money on any of the free agents or give up an picks in a trade. Sure Alex Smith would have been intriguing, but wasn't ideal. While he did have a great start to the 2012 season, his best yardage season falls shorts of Weeden's rookie season (3144 for Smith in 2011 and Weeded had 3385 in 2012). This should be troubling to Brown's fans.  I think Weeden needs to be given a chance to perform and McCoy should be kept on the roster as well. He got a raw deal. I think that QB is an area of need, but in this draft there is no Andrew Luck or RGIII. I think Geno Smith would be a big mistake at the 6 pick. Just hang on and give those two a chance to compete for the starting job. Go from there. Update: Jason Campbell signed with the Browns and Colt McCoy has been traded, making everything above a moot point!

2013 Defensive Free Agency

It is very difficult to endure another year of rebuilding, coaching changes, and personnel shifts. While I am more optimistic in this ownership group, I am tired of waiting for next year. This off-season though has been fairly positive. The Browns are making logical changes for the most part and seem to be targeting young, aggressive, semi-proven players. With the shift to the 3-4 defense, a personnel change was needed.  I do believe that Ray Horton was an excellent choice to lead this defense. Let's review the Browns off season to this point (3/17/13)

Areas of Need: LB, CB, DE  (Pass rushing was probably the biggest need on Defense)

Additions:

Paul Kruger, OLB
Previous team: Baltimore Ravens
Contract: 5 years, $41 mil

This is an excellent signing for the Browns, taking a great pass rusher from a divisional opponent.  He understands the AFC North and provides the Browns with something that was incredibly lacking, a pass rusher.  Paired with D'Qwell Jackson this could be quite an intimating line-backing corps. With the rumors that Jabaal Sheard will be switching to LB, Kruger could also provide good leadership, experience, and support for this transition. The thing I have enjoyed the most about Kruger is that he seems excited to be in Cleveland, he seems to get the passion of the franchise. While it could be argued that Kruger was overpaid, sometimes you have to overpay for an area of need in free agency. Great signing, well worth the investment.

Desmond Bryant, DE
Previous Team: Oakland Raiders
Contact: 5 years, $34 mil

When I heard the Browns signed the guy with the horrific mug shot, I was a bit surprised. I felt like that was a very Cincinnati move.  Then I researched the incident. He is a young kid who made a mistake, it is not a serious enough crime for him to be in Cincinnati, and should be moved on from. He is an incredibly intelligent, articulate, and solid player. This signing is great. Bryant has the opportunity to be a part of a great line with Rubin (if not traded), Big Phil Taylor, Billy Winn, and John Hughes, with some shifts to LB being possible.  The line is starting to look pretty solid, and very young. Big guy, fast, agile, and smart. Solid signing, wouldn't be surprised to see Rubin moved between now and draft day, he has become a bit dispensable, and a bit costly.

Quentin Groves, LB
Previous Team: Arizona Cardinals
Contract: 2 years, $2.8 mil

Three observations about this signing: 1. The Browns need copious amounts of linebackers to make this shift to the 3-4 work. 2. It is always a positive when you hire a coach/coordinator and they bring a player over with them. 3. The Browns really need pass rushers. This is a great signing and shows great value. He is a fast, athletic, hard-working linebacker.  This is a good signing, I think that groves will do wonders for the locker-room, pass rush, and overall team in 2013.

UPDATE

Kevin Barnes, CB
Previous team: Detroit
Contract: 1 year
Not a bad signing because this is such an area of need, however this is a depth signing. He has been bounced around a good amount including being released by Detroit. He will probably make the final roster, but does not fill the hole of a shut down cornerback.  I still think this is where Cleveland will be looking at pick 6 in the draft.

Chris Owens, CB
Previous Team: Atlanta
Contract: 1 year
Much like Barnes, Owens represents a depth-signing. He is a pretty versatile player who does experience from Atlanta, which has been playing at a high level, but the other available cornerback Brent Grimes would have been much sexier. This is not a bad signing and may indicate that the Browns want as much freedom in the draft as possible.

Review

This has been a very active free agency for the Browns.  These signings are all areas of need. They found some very solid players and have used a moderate portion of the $48 million in true cap space that they had. I am excited to see the Browns helping with the pass rush. However, until this point one of the major areas of need remains un-addressed.  The shut-down corner back position is still a one-man show. Joe Haden cannot defend three receivers by himself.  This league is shifting to pass heavy offenses.  This means you need two things: 1. Pass rush. 2. Secondary.  TJ Ward and Joe Haden make up a great starting point for an amazing secondary. However, in this league it is essential to have a stable of corner backs and safeties.  The Browns have filled the depth issue at CB, but need another Joe Haden like shut-down corner, but outside of him they do not have one true shut-down CBs.

Options going Forward:

Cornerback free agents:  The market is going quickly for cornerbacks, as most teams realize the importance and value of a proven NFL cornerback. Understanding that the Browns may have an under 30 policy for hiring players this off-season, thus eliminating the majority of the market (Gamble retired, Asomugha, Winfield, are all out) the market is quite limited with the signings of Antoine Cason, (SD to Arizona per ESPN, seemed like a realistic option with Norv Turner connection) and a few other less desirable options.  Here are a list of possible cornerbacks on the market as of 3/17/13:

Brent Grimes, Atlanta Falcons, Unrestricted Free Agent: This is the best remaining option for the Browns.  The good news is that he interviewed over the weekend with the Browns and said he enjoyed his time in the Cleve. The Bad news, at least two other teams are actively pursuing Grimes, including the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins (According to Alex Marvez, Fox Sports). I say there is a chance they could sign Grimes because Cleveland does have more salary cap space remaining than Atlanta and Miami. This would be an excellent signing for the Browns. While Grimes is recovering from an Achilles injury last year, he is a shutdown corner, so much so he was franchised by Atl in 2012.  Other than the filling of an obvious need at CB, Grimes would also allow the Browns much more freedom in the draft, instead of hoping that Milliner miraculously slides to them at 6. Grimes is 30 and coming off an achillies injury, so let's see how serious that is. Said he enjoyed his visit, but I think this would be a surprise. Update: Signed with Miami.

Captain Munnerlyn, Carolina Panthers, Unrestricted Free Agent: Many People out there are high on this guy and think the Chud connection will help out. I am not sold on that connection being that strong, but maybe? He in young, fast and versatile. I think he could be a solid signing, not having to be the number 1 guy helps him as well. I think this is probably the second, more likely, option. Probably a lower cap number as well.

DeAneglo Hall, Washington Redskins, Cut: I am not sure if his personality is something that Cleveland wants in the locker room, but he is still a viable option at CB. Maybe an option, but highly unlikely.  He is still a better option than watching Milliner get drafted before pick 6. I am not sure why he has not been more of an option.

Corner Back Draft Options

Dee Milliner, CB, ALA:  This would be better than any other option in the free agent market, however the odds of him being available at 6 are highly unlikely.  If he slid to the Browns at 6, I think they would still take him no matter what free agent signings they make from here. His stats are impressive, (see below, all stats per Bleacherreport.com). He looks even better in game, he is an athlete and would look perfect across the field from his SEC counterpart, Joe Haden. He is the ideal fit, but not likely without a trade up, which seems even more unlikely at this point.

Height: 6 Feet
Weight: 201
40: 4.37
Vertical Leap: 36 inches

Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington: Fast and versatile, been around the PAC-10 for awhile. Not nearly as desirable as Milliner, however he is a player that if he were to slide the Browns could look at. If the Browns sign a decent free agent corner and decide to trade back in the draft and pick up a second rounder, he could be someone to look at. The Browns need depth at CB, they will be looking at many options in the draft.Good family pedigree with two brothers, Marcus and Isiah both playing in the NFL.
Height: 6 Feet
Weight: 190
40: 4.38
Vertical Leap: 37.5 inches

Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi: This is looking to the much deeper rounds of the draft. This guy is incredibly quick. Gritty, hardworking, athletic corner back with good recovery speed. Very viable if he slides into the later rounds to add depth to the position. A guy like this could provide great value in the later rounds, which is where a team can be built. Maybe a solid 3rd or 4th corner back at best.
Height: 6 Feet
Weight: 192
40: 4.36
Vertical Leap: 35.5 inches

Defensive Off Season Summary

If Milliner shows up in Cleveland the entire off season looks like a brilliant move. That is taking a huge risk that he would be available at pick 6. If the Browns do not sign a veteran free corner back, and Milliner is not there at 6, the entire season could look like the Dallas game last year, with a mediocre QB torching the Browns corners. They have addressed the pass-rush and the front seven as well, if not better than hoped. However, the secondary needs some love to. The team also needs to look at

Going into the draft the Browns have done a decent job of addressing the pass rush and many key elements in positions to make the 3-4 transition.  However, corner back remains the biggest question mark. Joe Haden needs some help. The only legitimate corner back at the 6 spot is Dee Milliner. If he is off the board at this point, Dion Jordan the 6 foot 6 linebacker/end is another viable selection. He is very versatile and has major upside. Big, fast, and athletic, exactly what the defense could use.

Other than Milliner and Jordan there are few players that match with the Browns needs at the 6 spot. Having used a supplemental pick on Gordon (which was a solid pick), the Browns lack a second round pick. I would like to see the Browns trade back. The best case scenario is teams get into a bidding war to get Geno Smith. For example Buffalo and Arizona pick immediately after the Browns do. Both of these teams need a QB and are possibly high on Smith.  I would like to see Cleveland trade back with one of these teams to get a second rounder as well. I would be happy even with a third! .  Buffalo or Arizona may get jumpy and want to trade with Cleveland to secure the other does not get Smith. This would be ideal because the Browns do have many holes on both sides of the ball need attention.  Cleveland should try to get picks this year if the players they like are not available at 6.

The defense has something that all Cleveland teams do at this point, potential. This team is talented. Last year, the defense was not the problem.  The numbers may not reflect this, but the offense was so bad that the Defense was forced to do it all. I was hesitant to see another shift in schemes, coaches, and players. I thought the D was ok and could have continued to improve. I do like the pieces they are putting in place and think that the potential for success is there.

Offensive Off-season review to come in the next few days... Go Browns.
